Why do a lot of teenage students in high school join fraternities?

A lot of students of our generation, wants to have a popularity which leads somehow to the world of gangsters.Why do a lot of teenage students in high school join fraternities?
In high schools?? Thats a new one. In college maybe. As far as I know it's nothing more than an easy way to be social. I don't know first hand, I usually make friends on my own without group support.Why do a lot of teenage students in high school join fraternities?

To be part of the group.For a sense of belonging.
That's something new....I thought fraternities were in colleges.
